Student chef in final

A TALENTED student at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has won a place in the national final of the Knorr Student Chef of the Year competition.
Barry Reilly, aged 25, is preparing to travel to Cork on February 22 where he will compete in a final cook off with ten other student chef finalists.
If successful, the 2nd Year Culinary Arts student will be crowned Best Student Chef in Ireland and win a prize that includes a specially commissioned perpetual trophy to commemorate the 15th year of the competition; a fantastic food-photography experience with one of the UK’s most acclaimed food photographers, Gareth Morgans; and an evening of gastronomic greatness in Heston Blumenthal’s multi-award winning ‘The Fat Duck Restaurant’.
The theme of this year’s competition is Irish fusion and heading up the judging panel is Unilever Food Solutions’ Business Development Chef, Mark McCarthy; Chef Lecturer, Cork Institute of Technology, Ciarán Scully; and guest judge Martin Shanahan, Chef Proprietor of award-winning fish restaurant, Fishy Fishy, in Kinsale, Co Cork.
