Student hit woman with glass bottle
An incident in which a student had hit another woman on the head with a glass bottle was heard in Dundalk District Court last week. Before the court was Breda O’Hare, Carrickedmond, Kilcurry who admitted the assault charge which occurred at Brubakers, Park Street on January 2 2012.
The court was told that the victim had informed Gardai that she had been struck with the bottle and there had been a minor cut to her head. While the victim had sought medical attention she had not required any treatment, Judge William Hamill heard. Solicitor Tara Matthews, defending, said her client was a student and was willing to pay any medical costs involved. The case was adjourned for a short time and the judge was then told that the medical expenses amounted to e200.
Ms Matthews said that his client was a marketing student at DKIT and had not previous convictions. The incident had happened when she had too much drink taken. She had co-operated fully with the Gardai and had given her name and number before leaving the premises. She was “extremely remorseful”, the solicitor said. Judge William Hamill queried as to whether defendant had a drink problem because “most people don’t attack people with a bottle”. Ms Matthews said that the incident was “a moment of madness” for his client. She did not have drink issues, she added.
A probation officer told the court that the defendant did not have a problem with alcohol consumption and was “very genuine and remorseful”. The judge said that he did not want to blight defendant’s future and while he was not asking for a contribution to be made to the court poor box he would be “very impressed” if there was e200 in court by February 20.
