St. Vincent’s send 23 students to do battle in Young Scientist 2013

St. Vincent’s Secondary School will be well represented at the Young Scientists’ Exhibition this year.

The school has nine projects submitted, with the number of students participating totalling to twenty-three.

Transition-year students Blainaid Daly, Claire Simms and Aine Sally have compared of the effectiveness of different fat binding drugs. The team has entered into the chemical, physical and mathematical category.

Second-year students Hilary McCahill, Anna Gilgunn and Joy Quigley entered into the biological and ecological category. The team investigated the use of ‘corporate colours’ and data logging to improve the accuracy of glucose and protein tests in Junior Cert Science.

Having been puzzled by Body Mass Index (BMI), Sarah Finnegan, Sarah Flanagan and Emma Connolly have conducted experiments that question if BMI is a good enough predictor for Body Fitness.

In the social and behavioural category, Ellen McEneaney, Clodagh McCabe and Molly Cushnahan have investigated if a pencil grip and writing speed test are viable methods of determining if a child is exhibiting signs of a learning difficulty.

Ciara Logan, Claire Kelly and Ayla Laverty have looked at the effect household detergents have on the photosynthesis rate of aquatic plants.

In Technology, Roisin Kelly, Clodagh Kneel and Rebecca McArdle investigated the properties of ‘Human Battery Power.’

Social media is developing fact and different images and symbols are appearing on many websites. Sarah Englishby, Eimear Curtin and Victoria Kelly have asked is a virtual smile contagious.

Aoife Tonna-Barthet conducted a project investigating the relationship between a higher physical activity level to your memory, IQ and concentration.

Aoibheanna McKeown conducted a study on attitudes towards people with an intellectual disability.
