St Patrick's Day programme of activities
Parade 1pm: PATRICK Street, proceeding onto Church Street, Clanbrassil St, The Square, The Demesne and Park Street. A musical, fun, community orientated event with awards in various categories.
Participants include: Jim McLaughlin, Grand Marshal, Linda Halpenny, Louth Rose, Chinese students DKIT, Friendship band, cross-border, Gortaclare Competition Band Omagh, Dundalk FC, Local GAA, camogie clubs and community groups. There will be over 60 participants in total, almost double than last year.
14.30pm: Bouncy castle village with various inflatables to suit all age groups, refreshments marquee with music at the demesne.
Local producers at Market Square – Hot food, jewellery, cheese, fudge, chocolates, home made pastries and cakes.
Face painting and street entertainment on Earl St.
The Marshes Shopping Centre will also provide fun and entertainment all day after the Parade. This will consist of DJ entertainment and face painters in the centre; a funfair and big wheel outside at O'Brien's entrance; set dancers and traditional musicians promising a real festive atmosphere.
14.45: Ceili Mor Town Hall: Northern Ireland Friendship Band Full band consists of 30 members; it was founded in the mid 70s at the height of the troubles in Northern Ireland. The group is made up of various brass band members from all areas of Northern Ireland. Its aim is to provide a group of musicians who can perform for both sides of the community as well as North and South of the border. The Friendship Band covers a wide range of music which has developed over the last 20 years. As well as playing traditional marches they also play a number of Carnival type numbers with a Spanish flavour which were especially composed for the band on a previous trip to Carnival in Holland. Another feature of their programme is a selection of Beer Kellar Oompah Band type music. Other items include rag time, jazz, American "hootenany" and of course coming from Northern Ireland, a large selection of traditional Irish songs and ballads. The Friendship Band can be relied upon to give a lively performance at any venue and one of its most important qualitiies is the sheer enthusiasm of the band members.
3pm: Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Dun Dealgan: Involved with the promotion of Irish traditional music on a world scale, Comhaltas is a nonprofit cultural movement with hundreds of local branches around the world, they have been working for the cause of Irish music since the middle of the last century.
16.00: The Fontanels: The Fontanels were formed in Mid 2007 when two brothers, two lovers and a man machine came together with the mission to deliver something a little different. They take their musical influences from far and wide and infuse their sound with elements of pop, funk, kuduro, samba, grime and rock. They love playing live, and relish energetic shows that collaborate and interact with a crowd, especially a dancing crowd! Voted Dundalks' best band 2009 by Highway 67.
16.30: The Curtain Thieves: The Curtain Thieves are the hottest group around. A canny combination of traditional rock influence and pop hooks has gained the band a strong following during the early stage of their career. They're fast gaining popularity with a style of indie rock influenced by punk and reggae music. In June 2009 The Curtain Thieves recorded their debut 4 track EP in Tumbleweed Studios.
The EP launch nightbecame the fastest selling Spirit Store gig of the year. They have played major venues across the country including The Academy, The RDS, Whelans, Crawdaddy, The Village, The Spirit Store, McHughs and The Stables. The band started 2010 by playing at the BT Young Scientist Exhibition and is in planning for an Irish tour this summer on the back of their forthcoming EP.
17.00: RedTwelve: Over the years RedTwelve has taken part in some of the most prestigious music events in Ireland and played with some of the top acts on the circuit. From their first ever acoustic gig as support to folk-hero Josh Ritter, to winners of ‘Colleges Band & Song of the Year’, they have shown great diversity in their appeal to fans of different styles of music. They have been finalists in the IMRO Showcase Tour and the O2 New Bands Competition, wowing the crowd at both events.
They have played alongside established acts such as Duke Special, the Wall brothers (aka The Stunning), Bellx1 and the now defunct Turn. Invited to play at the Elliot Smith memorial events held in the Village, Dublin and The Odessey, Belfast to sell out crowds, Red Twelve were amongst the highlights in both those shows. As a result of their live performances both at home and in the UK they were invited by 2FM to record a live session for the Dave Fanning show, which was well received in music circles.
