St Fursey's kids host Euro pupils

ST. FURSEYS N.S. Haggardstown is playing host this week to 20 schoolchildren and 16 teachers from their European partner schools as part of a Multilateral Project titled "Young European Reporters".

The children and teachers from Poland, England, Romania, Italy and Turkey arrived on Sunday 20th September for four days and the children are being hosted by the families of pupils at St. Fursey's N.S.

Eight children from Haggardstown, last school year, spent four days in Italy and another eight were in England for four days, accompanied by their teachers as part of the project which is part funded by Leargas.

Leargas is an organisation that operates under the aegis of the Department of Education and Science. It manages European national and international exchanges and cooperation programmes in education, training youth and communication.

Pupils from the six countries are involved in publishing an international magazine over a two year period with editions on Culture and Traditions, A Healthy way of Living,Tolerance and Taking Care of our Environment.

All aspects of the curriculum are involved and in particular the development of the childrens' computer and I.C.T. skills.

As well as project meetings for the teachers, to review and plan for the second years work, many activities have been planned to give the visitors a taste of local life among the community.

A welcome concert was held in the school assembly hall on Monday morning showcasing the varied talents of the Haggardstown pupils.

On Tuesday the teachers visited Newgrange and Drogheda during the day while in the evening everyone was invited to the Geraldines grounds for an exhibition of Gaelic Games, football and hurling.

Today, Wednesday, all visitors will visit Dundalk, Louth County Museum, St. Patrick's Cathedral and out to Cuchullain’s Mount and Roche Castle.

A big send off is planned, in the Geraldines Sportshall, at 7.30 pm , in the form of a Ceile Mor and set dancing at which it is hoped as many parents, schoolchildren and their families will join the visitors and enjoy expert tuition in Irish Dancing.
