Solar powered parking meters come to town

NEW solar powered parking meters have been installed outside St Patrick's Cathedral in Dundalk as part of a meter replacement programme.

The old parking meters were ripped out on Tuesday, February 9 and replaced with new energy-saving models incorporating solar panels.

According to a spokesperson for Dundalk Town Council, the move is part of a wider initiative which will see all of the parking meters replaced by the end of 2010.

"A proposal was put forward to replace the parking meter machines in Dundalk and allowances have been made for the scheme in this year's budget," she said.

"The cost has not been established yet but tenders for the job will be going out shortly. When we receive the bids we will have a clearer idea of the cost."

Solar panel parking meters are already operating on Linenhall Street and the Rampart's car park. Dundalk Town Council is allocating money for the parking meter programme from a 2010 budget of almost e30.3 million.

The Council's other priorities for the year ahead include the completion of housing schemes at Barrack Street and Blackrock Road, the extension of Dundalk Sports Centre, and the refurbishment of Market Square.

The Council is also working closely with IDA Ireland to improve the quality and presentation of the space available to attract Foreign Direct Investment to Dundalk.
