Sinn Féin goes Green with new councillor!

By James Rogers

JENNIFER Green is set to become Sinn Fein's new representative on Dundalk Town Council, The Dundalk Democrat can reveal.

The former Dundalk IT student replaces Ian Dooley, who left the council last week after six years.

The 32-year-old Dundalk Central representative was just a year into his second term having initially been elected to the council in 2004. However, his decision to step down from his position on the council has given Jennifer Green an opportunity to get her views across and the 28-year-old is hoping to make a real impact in the role.

Speaking to The Dundalk Democrat, Jennifer said: “I'm absolutely over the moon to have been put forward for the role. It's just fantastic.

“I only got the word late last week and I can't wait to get going now. I've been a Sinn Fein supporter for a few years but I only joined the party officially about six months ago so this has happened quicker than I ever expected.”

The Mulholland Avenue woman – daughter of Jimmy and Eilish Green from the Point Road – said it was a bittersweet feeling taking up her new role but she insisted her predecessor Ian Dooley was fully behind her.

“It's a bit of a bittersweet moment but it was the right decision for him.

“He's behind me all the way though and it's brilliant to have his support and the backing of a great team,” she said.

Ian Dooley stepped down from the Town Council last week, insisting he had lost his appetite for the role. He will remain a member of the Sinn Fein party.

He said: “Unfortunately over the last couple of months I've felt that my commitment to the role as a public representative was not as great as it had been.

“It was a commitment that I just couldn't give anymore. The drive and passion that was there in 2004 and the following years just seemed to have evaporated over the years so I felt it was unfair for me to continue on in that role, particularly when I felt I couldn't give the commitment,” he said.

Mr Dooley, from Riverside Crescent, added that the party were 'very receptive' and 'very understanding' about his decision.

Cllr Jennifer Greene will be co-opted onto Dundalk Town Council at their next meeting.
