Significant increase in number of burglaries in the region new CSO results reveal

THERE has been a significant increase in the number of burglaries and similiar offences in the region new figures from the CSO have revealed.

There were 397 more burglaries in the first half of 2012 in the Northern Region compared with the same period in 2011.

The Northern Reguion comprises of counties Louth, Monaghan, Cavan, Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal.

The figures tally with a rising concern in the Dundalk and its surrounds that break-ins are becoming a increasing problem as the recession continues unabated.

According to the latest CSO crime statistics, there was an 18.3 per cent increase in burglaries in the Northern Region, which includes Cavan and Monaghan, in the year to the end of June.

A Garda spokeperson told the Democrat that people should be extra vigilent in the winter months as crime of this nature increase as the nights get longer.

There were 2,565 burglaries in this region to the end of June. That’s 2,565 ordinary families and individuals in this area who had their homes or business targeted by criminals.

The rise of 18 per cent exceeds the rise nationally, which saw a rise of 10.3 per cent.

Nationally In the twelve-month period ending in June 2012, there were 28,623 recorded Burglary and related offences representing an increase of 2,663 (+10.3 per cent) on the corresponding period ending in June 2011.

Comparing the same periods,

Aggravated burglary fell by 19.4 per cent while recorded Burglary (not aggravated) offences increased by 10.3 per cent to 27,619.

New Central Statistics Office (CSO) crime trends show that while burglaries increased by 10 per cent in the 12 months to the end of June, they fell – by 25 per cent – in the last three months of that period.

Minister for Justice and Defence Alan Shatter said he believed the reduction had been brought about by the successful Garda Operation Fiacla, established in the spring to target the increased rate of burglaries.
