School is out for 6th Class

It has been a big year for the 6th class students of both Haggardstown and Blackrock National Schools what with the excitement of their Confirmation day and the preparation for the secondary school assessments and finally their summer holidays.

But now having graduated from primary school the children can reflect on a very productive year before they make the giant leap to secondary school in September.

The two schools have much in common with both classes having achieved their Green Flags towards the end of last term. Minister for Justice, Dermot Ahern expressed his pride in the hard work of both of his local schools at their Green Flag days. Both classes also graduated from their National Safety Course having passed the final examination in June.

Ms Mulholland's 6th class in St. Fursey's enjoyed a very busy year. The students creative skills came in handy for their recent fashion show when they designed, made and modeled the outfits made entirely out of recycled materials and their performance of the play 'Ernie and His Incredible Hallucination' at the end of year concert in the Fairways Hotel got rave reviews from parents and teachers alike.

In the Credit Union quiz their team, made up of Eva Jones, Tiernan McGowan, Paul Conlon and Emmett Carvil performed well in the regional rounds and pupils Eva, Mukhtar and Tiernan took 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Credit Union poster competition.

In sport the boy's Gaelic team made it to the final and in their full contact rugby league they won all of their matches bar one. The girl's Gaelic team also performed well winning all of their matches, in basketball they reached the semi-final of the schools league and in the tag rugby blitz they won two of their matches and drew two.

School trips for the St Fursey's class included Carlingford Adventure Centre, a tour of the old jail in Dundalk Garda Barracks, several trips to the town hall to see musicals and plays, an outing to the National Concert Hall and a shopping trip to the Marist Trade Fair.

Over in Blackrock, the students of Mr. Morahan's and Ms Stanley's 6th classes had an equally productive year. Their artistic skills were called upon on several occasions throughout the year. The students entered the playground art com-petition to help create a design for the new playground in Blackrock. They also took part in a competition to design the new Blackrock tidy town's flag and they participated in the schools art project led by artist Martina Galvin.

In sport the Blackrock boy's basket ball team won the schools basketball competition and the girl's team also performed well making it all the way to the final. The under-13 boy's Gaelic team also won the McArdle Cup beating the Friary in Knockbridge for the title.

The children thoroughly enjoyed a field trip to the Bugsy Malone Show during the year and the sixth class members of the school choir did a wonderful job at the First Holy Communion Mass. During the year a representative from the Pioneer Association also visited the class giving them an educational talk on drug and alcohol abuse and as usual it was the 6th class students who acted as traffic wardens for the year in conjunction with the Louth County Council.

Now heading their separate ways to the secondary schools of their choice the children of outgoing 6th class of Blackrock and Haggardstown will no longer be big fish in a small pond but their preparation throughout the last year led by Principals, Eoin D'Arcy, St. Fursey's N.S. and Joe McKenna, St. Oliver Plunkett's N.S. should leave them well prepared for the year ahead.
