Safety of road in question
QUESTIONS are being asked about the safety of a cross-border road after a Newry business man, who was orignially from Dundalk, died after his car plunged into a canal in recent weeks.
Local businessman Pat McArdle died when his car left the Fathom Line, outside Newry and plummeted into the canal. Mr McArdle was originally born in Blackrock and was well known to the local community.
He moved to Omeath and became well known in the Newry area as an exceptional entrepreneur, and was heading towards his home when the accident happened. Mr McArdle was the brother of Gerry McArdle, who taught at the Marist School in Dundalk and many of his family still live in the Blackrock area.
Last week Newry Mayor Charlie Casey said: “There is a history with that road. There have been a number of incidents and a number of near misses.”
There have been similar crashes on the road in the past. In a statement the Department for Regional Development in the North said: “Roads Service has no immediate plans to erect barriers at this location, however we will consider the outcome of the PSNI investigation.”
