Oxfam Ireland , with the help of professional rugby player David Kearney, are appealing for people from the Dundalk and Carlingford area to lend a helping hand by volunteering at Trailtrekker 2012

Volunteers are needed to staff 10 checkpoints along the scenic route along with the start and finish lines and play an integral role in encouraging and motivating the teams taking part.

Supported by global sponsor State Street, Trailtrekker 2012 is Oxfam Ireland’s flagship event and raises vital funds that change the lives of families and communities affected by poverty and injustice for the better.

Oxfam Ireland’s Events Manager Grace O’Neill said: “Local volunteers are at the heart of what makes Trailtrekker an inspirational event.

The 120 teams taking part rely on our amazing volunteers to cheer them on them and provide support all the way to the finishing line.

“The event raises much-needed funds for Oxfam’s work, from the current food crisis in West Africa to longer-term development projects in east, central and southern Africa. By volunteering at Trailtrekker, you are helping to bring positive change to some of the poorest communities in the world.”

Volunteering at Trailtrekker is an enjoyable and rewarding experience, according to volunteer Andrew Doak.

Helping out at Trailtrekker 2011 has inspired him to sign up for this year’s 100km challenge: “I wanted to get involved when I saw the sense of achievement and elation on people’s faces as they crossed the finish line.”
