Rugby ace Stephen scores his biggest win of the year, winning VIP tickets to Electric Picnic on Tony Fenton's show on Today FM
THE new season might be a few weeks away yet but already Dundalk Rugby Club captain Stephen McGee has scored what is likely to be the biggest win of his year.
On Friday the Bellurgan man became the envy of just about everyone nationwide when he scooped a dream prize of VIP tickets to Electric Picnic this weekend on Tony Fenton's show on Today FM.
As well as free tickets to the event at Stradbally, Co Laois, Stephen will make his way there via helicopter before enjoying a champagne reception and a boutique tent. There will also be a limo home from the event at the end of the weekend.
He will also be given the opportunity to watch the band of his choice from the side of stage and, if that's not enough, he has also scooped tickets to Electric Picnic for the next five years!
Speaking to The Dundalk Democrat about his win, Stephen said it was a "phenomenal prize".
"I heard about the competition on Monday when John Reynolds, who runs Electric Picnic, was on with Tony Fenton about it.
"I sent in a text on the Monday but then on Tuesday I sent about 20 webtexts off from work. About 10 minutes later Pamela from the Tony Fenton show rang me to say I would be called back to go on air."
Stephen was played snippets of 10 songs with 20 points up for grabs if he could name the song and the artist in each track. In the end, he scored 18 but he admitted he would not have got anywhere near that tally were it not for his colleagues in KMR Accounting in Crowe Street.
"I only managed about eight myself but in the end I scored 18 out of 20 in a time of 29 seconds thanks to Barry G, Aoife and Colm in KMR.
"I knew that score would be tough to beat but I didn't want to get too confident either. The contestant on Wednesday was hopeless but the girl on Thursday got 16.
"Then on Friday Tony Fenton was on holidays and Phil Cawley was standing in for him. He really made me sweat it out before telling me I had won.
"Now I'm just over the moon. I really can't wait for the weekend.
"To top it all off it's my birthday on Sunday and this prize means I'm going to enjoy my birthday for the next five years."
The one dilemma facing Stephen was who to bring with him for the weekend but in the end his girlfriend Tara McGeough won out.
"My brother Paddy got married back in June and I knew he had wanted Electric Picnic tickets for him and Rachel but it was a bit too much to give him this so I'll be taking Tara with me.
"My sister Julie should be going as well and there's a good crew going from school so it should be a great weekend.
"I'm still waiting to hear the exact details of when I'm leaving. I had hoped to get the helicopter from either the Ballymac or the Dundalk pitch but I might have to go to Westin airport.
"I'm still not sure which band I'll watch from the side of stage either. It'll probably be either Hot Chip on Saturday or Mumford and Sons on Sunday.”
Whatever Stephen chooses, you can bet it will be a weekend he won't forget in a hurry.
