Review of Dundalk Musical Society’s performance of ‘The Sound of Music’

Dundalk is alive with “The Sound Of Music” as the Dundalk Musical Society brought the famous Von Trapp family to An Tain Theatre last week.
Having attended the show on Thursday night, the audience was treated to timeless classics and musical hits like “My Favourite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” and “Climb Every Mountain.”
The Musical Society has yet again produced and delivered a top class preformace, rightly earning standing ovations.
All thoughts of the economic recession, doom and gloom and bills vanished from my mind, as I was whisked away to the hills to enjoy the art of singing, and of course a pleasurable plot that will touch the heart, all for the price of a few euros.
The success story is the cast and orchestra, and it seems like a fairly exhaustive list of singing talent in this production. With Aisling McCormack as Maria Rainer, Orlaith Crosbie as the Mother Abbess, Peter Lawless as Captain Von Trapp, Lorraine Quigley as Baroness Schraeder, Tim Ahern as Max Detweiler, and an impressive amount of nuns, this show was literally packed with talent.
Clear harmonies and tight, technical execution make for more than one hair-standing moment. You’d cheer and jump out of your seat after “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” and delight at the fantastic rendition of “Edelweiss.”
Speaking to the Dundalk Democrat following the preformance, Paudie Breen, who plays Rolf in the show and who is also PRO for the Society, said “The response has been overwhelming, it has been a fantastic run.
“The show has the wow factor, behind the curtains when the Von Trapp villa is unveiled, we could hear a gasp from the audience. The set is amazing.
The highlight for him was the level of audience participation in the production.
“It was brilliant to hear the whole theatre singing Edelweiss, these a timeless classics that everybody knows,” he said.
“It’s a great testament to all involved across the board. Our productions are high quality and in recent years the town has recognised that,” Paudie added.
We wave goodbye to the Musical Society until January 2013 when they welcome us back with the annual panto “Snow White and the Sven Dwarfs.”
As the Von Trapp’s would say - So long, farewell!
