Radio documentary to air on PJ Carroll plant

A special documentary will be aired on LMFM Radio this Bank Holiday Monday March 18th, reliving the days of the former PJ Carrolls Factory in Dundalk.

‘The Last Smoke’ is a 90-minute programme, and is produced and presented by local journalist, Colm Corrigan.

PJ Carrolls’ Dublin Road factory ceased production for good in the summer of 2006, bringing an end to the company’s 182-year association with the town and it’s people.

PJ’s rich history dates back to 1824 when its founder opened his first tobacco factory and store, at 38 Church Street.

That address remained the hub of the operation until 1970, when the company moved it’s main production base to the state of the art plant on the southside of town.

Now, many of the ex-employees whose time with the company involved working in both factories, have come together to reminisce on the ‘good old days’, when work was plentiful and the pay generous.

During its heyday, Carrolls was widely regarded as the best employer in town, where the workers were well looked after, and given every chance to further their careers within the company, some to management level.

Together with former workers, the documentary will also include contributions from members of the Carroll family, who maintained a very strong association with the Company up until the 1980s.

The documentary will also include references to the Company’s sponsorship of sporting events, as well as the task of sourcing tobacco from abroad, particularly America.

The programme, which will be broadcast at 1.10pm, is supported by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.
