Pupils at Bay Estate celebrate World Book Day

THE staff and pupils in Scoil Muire na nGael, Bay Estate organised a range of activities to coincide with World Book Day last Thursday.

The junior infant pupils left their school uniforms at home and came to school dressed in their pyjamas and dressing gowns to mark the event. As part of the celebrations, they brought along their teddy bear or favourite cuddly toy and introduced them to the world of books at school. Getting in on the act too were the brave junior infant teachers, who also came to work dressed in their favourite pyjamas.

Pupils in second, third and fourth classes dressed up for the day as their favourite book characters and there was an array of colourful and creative costumes to be seen in the school on the day. Goldilocks and The Three Bears, The Gingerbread Man, Indiana Jones, Cinderella and Harry Potter were among the chartacters that arrived on the day and they were keenly interviewed by the younger students in the school.

Many of the senior classes took part in other activities - story reading for younger students in the junior end of the school, designing book covers and writing book reviews. Many classes also logged on online and listened to famous authors reading excerpts from their books.

Deputy Principal Martina Rafferty said: "There was a great atmosphere in the school on the day with staff and students actively getting involved in all the activities.

"It's a great way of creating a greater awareness of books and getting the children to develop a love of reading. In an age of iPods, Nintendos and other electronic games it is important that our children also experience the joy and pleasure of reading books.

"We had a very successful book fair at the school before Christmas and in September we will have a new state of the art school library, as part of our new school extension," she said.
