There was a huge turnout for Ardee Community School’s open night. Everyone received a warm and courteous welcome from staff and students who hosted an enjoyable and informative evening for the hundreds of people who turned out for the occasion.

It was a great opportunity for everyone to see the wide range of disciplines and skills that are taught at
Ardee Community School.

Science, languages, engineering, woodwork, needlework, cookery, music, art, are just a few of the skills that were on display, and the quality of the work was astonishing.

“The students take great pride in their work,” said woodwork teacher Tony Corcoran.

And this was obvious when you looked at the skill and care taken by the
students.

The art work, under the supervision of art teacher Mary Kavanagh, is superb, work of the highest quality.

We also spoke to transition year student Gemma Myles and guidance councillor and transition year teacher Ciara O’Meara.

Gemma explained how being in transition year had given her the opportunity to build up her confidence in subjects she did not believe were her strongest point.

She also took part in a mini company project in which the students learned how to run a business and make a profit.

They learned interview skills, first aid, and team-building skills in which they worked with other schools from the North.

Gemma also worked with residents at the nearby Moorehall Nursing Home with whom she still keeps in touch.

The transition year
students also trained in giving talks to first years on the reasons for not smoking.

This was a wonderful evening that illustrated the great dedication by the staff of Ardee Community School and the wonderful talents of its students.
