Last Thursday Realt na Mara held a very unique and special event called the Blanket Earth Project in the school.

It was a fundraising event for the equipping and fitting out of the school’s new Sensory Room, which caters for the additional needs of all the school’s children on the Autism spectrum.

This project is the brain child of Derry man, Paul Mack, who visited Dundalk last May and raised 1,100 euros for the Sensory Room in a bucket collection at the Long Walk Shopping Centre.

Paul wants to create the World’s largest ‘Love Blanket’ which will visit every nation over a fifteen year period growing in size and strength gathering positive messages and signatures.

Over 600 Schools will be invited to participate in the project and each school must select and paint one of seven themes: love, hope, change, kindness, peace, happiness and forgiveness on a 6 by 3 metre calico canvass.

Réalt na Mara has contributed to this Blanket using the theme of ‘forgiveness’, which brings health and healing to all.

Each class will be represented on the blanket in individual ways.

Sonas and Suaimhneas are represented by yellow happy faces, junior infants and senior infants are represented by orange coloured handprints representing life and vitality, first and second class by red love hearts, third and fourth class by green shamrocks representing our Irishness and fifth and sixth class by blue footprints representing life’s journey.

The blanket was due to be handed over to Paul Mack at the school on Thursday but unfortunately Paul was unable to attend himself.

It will arrive in Grafton Street, Dublin on St. Valentine’s Day and then the ‘Love Blanket’ will leave Ireland on February 27 bound for the Southern Hemisphere culminating in a major world showcase in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2016 at the Olympic Games.
