‘Priority is to find jobs for HMV staff’
The manager of the Marshes Shopping centre has described the confirmation of the loss of jobs as “very dissappointing”.
Harry Traynor now says that the priority is to help the staff find jobs at other retail outlets in the Marshes.
“It’s very disappointing,” Mr Traynor told the Democrat. “It illustrates how desperately hard it is for retailers out there at the moment.
“I suppose we were expecting the job losses, and it looked unlikely that the Irish wing of the business would be saved. “We will work at finding new positions for the 15 to 20 posts that have been lost at HMV, hopefully with other retailers in the centre, but it is very difficult.”
All the stock will now be returned as it was on a sell or return basis for suppliers.
“We want to re-let that unit, as we don’t want it to be sitting idle for months to come. It won’t nescessarily be a similar outlet to HMV and we may well look at sub dividing it as it is a large space.
“There was no Ticket Master outlet from the HMV, so I suppose that is one less complexity from the loss of the store.
“All the major shopping centres across Ireland are having the issue of stores closing, even if you look at the likes of Dundrum. The Republic have gone into administration in the UK, and they had outlets here in Ireland. It’s a problem we are seeing right across the board.”
“Sadly, it’s a sign of the times,” said Mr Traynor. “The future of the HMV space will now go to our retail letting team.”
All of the Dundalk employees of the shop will receive statutory redundancy.
