It was a special day for all the pupils and staff at Scoil Mhuire gan Smal Kilsaran. On Monday, his excellency President Michael D Higgins, unveiled a Tree of Knowledge mural at the school and visited the school’s new special unit.

This was President Higgins’s second visit to Louth.

In March he visited Ardee to launch National Tree Week.

The President was met by school principal Mr Ruairi Mac Donnaill, members of staff and the pupils themselves.

The school has a new sensory room and special unit which caters for children with special needs.

President Higgins visited the sensory room which provides stimulation for the children with special needs who attend the school. He met teachers and pupils and was greatly impressed by Scoil Mhuire gan Smal, one of the most progressive in the county.

Members of the school choir sang for the President in Irish.

President Higgins said it was good to hear children sing in Irish.

Referring to the Tree of Knowledge, he said the words chosen by the children themselves expressed what schoolis about: friends, and other people.

“On top of the tree is the word ‘grow’,” he said. “And that is what education is about.

“This is the kind of thing we should be doing: protecting the bottom line of education.”
