Pole dancing in the Cooley Mountains
The Slieve Foy, Co. Louth is the highest mountain in the Cooley/Gullion area, the perfect location to discover the outdoors on foot with fabulous scenery and walks for all abilities.
On a recent Sunday, hill walkers on their approach to the peak were graced with a rare view, none other than a group of pole enthusiasts from Dundalk, dancing on the top of the mountain.
Mountain walkers in the Mournes experienced similar scenes when a group of 20 pole enthusiasts gathered from all over Ireland to climb the Slieve Donard , the highest mountain in Northern Ireland and in 9-county Ulster.
The group are the first known to have pole danced on a mountain in Ireland and rather than making their mark and planting a traditional flag, instead they performed the ‘human flag’ on a pole and many other moves!
The adventurous treks are organised by El Fegan, owner of the pole fitness studio Polercise Ltd in Dundalk to help raise money and in preparation for her Charity climb of Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro, next March in aid of the Pole Sports Benevolent Fund, when a group of 30 pole enthusiasts from all over the world will meet to pole dance on its peak!
“The mountains we have climbed so far are normally a relatively easy climb although braving the extreme weather conditions as we did on the day of the Donard Climb and carrying up an eleven foot pole to dance on at the top prove a little more challenging. We got a beautiful day in Carlingford on Sunday which made the climb all the more enjoyable”.
Laura, a student at Polercise, who joined the climb on Sunday says “this was a great way to do something a little bit different to raise funds for charity. We definitely entertained the hill walkers.”
