Panicked when he saw Gardai

A man who was seen at Dundalk railway station in suspicious circumstances and “panicked” when he saw Gardai fled the scene but was later found waiting on the steps of the Garda station when the Gardai returned, the local court heard last Wednesday.

Before the court was Ciaran Austin Hill 22, Ashford Crescent, Ashbrook accused of unlawful possession of drugs on October 29 2011.

The court was told by Inspector Brendan Cadden that a property where defendant was staying was searched and joints of cannabis found. Earlier in the day, the defendant had been taken to the Garda Station for the purpose of being searched but nothing was found. However, he was seen by Garda Gallagher in the car park at the railway station where he was seen to retrieve an object. When Gardai approached he fled the scene but then went back to the Garda station.

Solicitor Sean T O’Reilly said his client had been studying music and business studies in London and came to Dundalk “for love”. He was part of a music collective in the town. He had played in the Town Hall for charity. “He foolishly got involved in all of this”, he said.

Judge Alan Mitchell imposed total fines of e300 on the drugs offence and for escaping from lawful custody.
