Our young scientists

OUR young scientists who took part in the annual Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition at the RDS are to be congratulated are to be congratulated on taking part in this event which has grown over the years.

What began with a few hundred entrants back in 1964 has grown into an annual event that attracts thousands of students from all over the country.

Some of these young people have been head-hunted by multinational corporations and international colleges and universities which is just some indication of the high esteem in which the exhibition is held.

Over the past few years, the number of girls taking part - and winning awards - has grown significantly and this year three girls from Cork took the overall prize.

Here in Louth, Deirdre Ruane-McAteer and Emma Shields from Bush Post Primary School took the runner-up group prize.

They studied whether or not the views and opinions of young people living in border counties would differ on the social issue of abortion.

Among the other Louth students to do well were Áine Grennan and Eimear Shine from St Louis Secondary School.Shane McQuillan, Alex Cahill, and Philip McGuinness, from De La Salle College and Conor Begley from Coláiste Rís.

Sinn Fein deputy Gerry Adams called in to congratulate the students and Senator Jim D’Arcy has been loud in his praise for our young scientists.
