Louth County Libraries and Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) Library have launched a joint service for its members, the first of its kind in the country.
The new service is called 1 Card 6 Libraries. It allows members of Louth County Libraries who currently can use the five branches, Dundalk, Ardee, Carlingford, Dunleer, and Drogheda, to also use their membership card to borrow and use the services at DkIT library.
And the students and staff at Dundalk Institute of Technology can do likewise.
The service also offers free WiFi access and study space to students in any of the branch libraries as well as free WiFi hot spots in Dundalk Town Centre.
The service was launched at both DkIT and the headquarters of the county library service at Jocelyn street in Dundalk.
Ann Campbell the registrar of DkIT who thanked the dedicated staff of both organisations who made the whole thing happen.
DkIT Librarian Ann Cleary said the new service is the first of its kind in the country and it was great to be able to be able to provide it and the collaborative opportunities it will bring to library services in Louth.
Louth County Librarian Bernadette Fennell said the project will allow easier access to the collections and ultise the staff expertise of both library services.
Leas Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Cllr Jim Lennon spoke about the commitment shown by both library services in creating vibrant community spaces for the people of Louth.
County Manager Joan Martin paid tribute to the staff of both services who took up the idea and developed it.
She said 250 people visited the branches of Louth county libraries last year.
“It’s a lot of people who value the service,” she said. “We already have a library service to be proud of and we’re leading the way.”
She said this was just the beginning of the project which would serve the cultural and learning needs of the people of Louth.
So far 650 members of the county library service have joined the new service.
It can particulary offer a wider service to people studying in a certain field.
