A 28 year old man who was arrested for public order offences on New Year’s Day – having been granted bail at a special court sitting on Christmas Eve, was remanded in custody for a week at Dundalk district court last Wednesday.
Michael O’Connor with an address at Aghameen Park, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk was also before the court in relation to a number of other previous incidents – including a charge of violent disorder in relation to an incident where he was found carrying a machete.
Insp. Martin Beggy told last Wednesday the court that the defendant caused €400 worth of damage when he jumped on the bonnet of a Toyota Avensis on Park Street on November 3rd last and he was arrested for public order offences the following day after he was involved in an altercation.
On the 23rd of December, gardai had to use pepper spray to restrain him when they were investigating report of males urinating in a doorway.
The court heard on the 15th of April last year, half an hour after his family home had been attacked, the defendant and a number of other youths arrived in an areas where Gardai were dealing with a suspect.
The court was told Michael O’Connor was holding a machete and other weapons including an axe were recovered from amongst the group, who were allegedly planning to damage the suspect’s car.
Insp. Beggy said the accused had number of previous convictions including public order, criminal damage, drink driving and violent disorder.
The Defence solicitor said that throughout the offences, too much drink had been taken and his client would pay for the damage caused to the Avensis.
In relation to the violent disorder charge, he said it involved a number of youths who were “greatly riled” and tried to do something about it.
He added that the person involved had not made a complaint to gardai.
Judge Flann Brennan in remanding the accused in custody for a week said he had granted him bail on Christmas Eve and he had abused it. He added that he also had other serious matters before him and had a bad record.
