New scheme to tackle racism in the workplace

A NEW programme which aims to tackle institutional sectarianism and racism in the workplace has been launched by the Louth County Enterprise Board (LCEB).

The programme was launched by the Minister for Integration John Curran at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Dundalk on Thursday, February 4.

Sarah Mallon from LCEB presented findings from new research on the nature of institutional sectarianism and racism in Co Louth and the Newry and Mourne area.

An action plan for the programme was unveiled detailing the approaches LCEB will take over the coming year to address the issues raised by the research.

Seven business and diversity workshops will be held in a variety of venues across Louth and Newry from next March until October 2010.

Topics covered will include 'The Business Case for Diversity Management', 'Diversity in the Business Community' and an 'Ethnic Entrepreneurs Progamme'.

"The business case for diversity is a well proven fact and the workshops and events running over the coming months take a creative approach to reaching the various elements of the business community in the area," she said.

The event was also addressed by Minister Curran, LCEB CEO Ronan Dennedy, Anthony Donohoe from the Louth County Development Board and Tinu Achioya from the Louth Peace Partnership.

"We are now facing many new challenges during this economic downturn. Increasing numbers on the unemployment register and significant cuts in public expenditure have impacted upon everyone living here," said Minister Curran.

"The greatest challenge of all will be to use our available resources to achieve the best and most efficient outcomes for all members of society - members who have made a significant economic, social and cultural contribution to this country over the last number of years."

According to LCEB CEO Ronan Dennedy, he hopes that the programme will convince institutions, employers and business owners in Co Louth of the business case for diversity in the workplace.

"We hope that, whether in hiring employees or awarding subcontracts for services, these organisations will access all the human resource available to them within this region and not limit that search for talent on the basis of race or religion," he said.
