The new telescope installed on the Blackrock Promanade

The telescope has been installed by Blackrock Tidy Towns to encourage visitors to this wonderful environment to get a closer look at some of the beautiful wildlife that also uses the seashore of Blackrock

The telescope is located at the southern end of the promenade, overlooking Dundalk Bay with stunning views across to the Cooley Mountains. Dundalk Bay is THE best place for wintering birds in the state with upwards of 60,000 birds feeding there every year. Members of Blackrock Tidy Towns feel that the provision of the telescope complements other initiatives which, as part of Blackrock’s own biodiversity plan, raise awareness of the local ecology on this very popular area.

“Dundalk Bay is an immensely important place for wildlife but very few people realise it” said Abby McSherry, Action for Biodiversity Project officer covering Louth,

“At this time of year the first waders are arriving, still in their smart summer plumage, and before long thousands of birds will be seen wheeling across the sky. A number of public birdwatching facilities have been erected or are being planned for Dundalk Bay and partnership with the Tidy Towns Groups is essential to deliver these facilities for visitors and locals.
