New figures reveal high level of Community Employment Schemes in County Louth

Figures were released last week by the Minister for Social Protection and show Louth has a strong CE scheme

Figures showed the number of community employment schemes in the Louth area, the number of participants for each scheme, the funding that was provided for each scheme every year from 2009 and the number of jobs or CE places that have been lost in each scheme in 2012.

There are currently 29 community employment schemes in the Louth area with nine of those in Dundalk itself. Louth has gained 796 places on community employment schemes since 2009.With 296 places in Dundalk, while Drogheda has 319 places. In 2011 this was cost €13,509,869.55.

The community employment scheme helps the long term unemployed and other disdavantaged individuals to get back to work by offering part-time placements in businesses within their local communities. After the palcement participants are then encouraged to go out and seek permanent employment based on the new skills they have gained. There are two categories of community employment scheme with different eligibility requirements. The first is the part time integration option which allows participants the chance to work under the community employment scheme for a maximum of one year. The other option is the Part-time job option. Which allows participants over the age of 55 a part-time work placement of up to six years and participants under 55 a place for three
