New Dundalk school of music is launched
The Dundalk School of Music is now officially open.
The comprehensive music education and training centre officially opened to the public recently and already, it has over 100 students enrolled.
In November of 2009, the school opened its doors at Brewery Business Park and has seen its student base grow, but after the recent official open day, the numbers exploded for Patricia Duffy's unique school.
Patricia, who studied music from an early age, said: "It was a huge success and I was overwhelmed by the support of local musicians who turned out on the day and the public. I was delighted to see that people really want to see this in the town.
"We received a lot of feedback and people were surprised that it took so long for Dundalk to have a centre like this."
On the day, a number of the children from the school gave a live performance to the crowd, something that was particularly daunting, considering it was their first time playing to such a large audience.
However, despite having celebrities like Jim Corr in the crowd, the students took it all in their stride.
"Some of them never played in public before. It was a bit daunting, but the way we teach at the school is to let them have fun with it so I think a lot of them took it in their stride.
"Jim was very impressed with the facilities and in the future, hopefully he is going to do a questions and answers session with the group. There was huge interest in the pre-instrumental classes for five to seven-year-olds as it gives them a good foundation before they take on instruments."
Such was the interest in some classes, the school is now booked out to capacity on one of the days, making it a real success story, especially in these difficult times. It is something that Patricia almost cannot believe.
For those people who missed the opening day, they can call and make an appointment to tour the premises and speak with teachers by calling 085-7213077.
