New all Irish school will start next September

Coláiste Lú, the new all-Irish post-primary school for Co. Louth, is set to open its doors for the first time next September.

The school is commencing an enrolment process for first year students after the Halloween mid-term break. Dr. Pádraig Kirk, CEO of the Louth VEC, said, “the plan is to start with small numbers and allow the school expand in consecutive future years.

“I envisage no more than two small first year groups commencing next September”.

Coláiste Lú teaching staff are set to visit primary schools across the county before Christmas promoting the school and distributing enrolment forms and copies of the school’s prospectus.

The all Irish school will open at the VECs education complex at Chapel St. in Dundalk town centre.

It will be one of four post-primary schools located close to the town centre.

The VEC already owns two former post-primary school buildings at its Chapel St. premises and has recently acquired the adjacent former ESB administration head quarters building.

Dr. Kirk said, “our new building is currently undergoing restoration and refurbishment work and will be used as the start-up accommodation for our new all-Irish school. This building has the same foot-print as a 250 pupil school with ample adjoining courtyard space for outdoor activities”.

Dr. Kirk said, “our Chapel Street premises makes for an excellent start-up facility. The school will be kitted out to the highest of standards in keeping with a modern high-tech school.

“I am confident that parents and students alike will be very impressed when the school opens its doors”.

For its first few years Coláiste Lú will share sporting facilities, such as full size gymnasium and playing fields, with Pobalcoláiste Chú Chulainn, the VECs new 1,000 place post-primary school set to begin construction in Dundalk next year.

A principal will be appointed to Coláiste Lú early in 2013. As the school grows it is envisaged that it will relocate to a new site.

An information evening for parents and students will be held before Christmas, while an open evening will take place in January 2013.
