Monday's floods in Dundalk were the worst in 50 years

FORMER Dundalk Democrat editor and current Trip Through Time contributor Peter Kavanagh insists that Monday night's flooding in Dundalk was the worst in 50 years

Peter, who lives on the St Alphonsus Road, one of the areas worst affected by this week's rainfall, uncovered an old photo of flooding in the same area in 1960 following Monday night's events, which saw Dundalk Fire Service dealing with the problem in the area from 8.15pm to 1am.

The photo was taken by his brother Paul, now 81, when he worked as a journalist for The Dundalk Democrat.

However, Peter – whose family have lived on the St Alphonsus Road since 1937 – said he felt this week's flooding was worse than that of 1960.

"Last night's flooding was definitely the worst in 50 years," he said.

"In fact, I think it was even higher than in 1960."

Peter said that his brother Paul's garden was severely flooded but that water did not enter either of their homes.
