Men supporting Women’s Aid

THE news that Women’s Aid Dundalk will expand its accommodation services this year will be welcomed by all.

They plan to double their accommodation capacity and so avoid having to turn down requests for support.

Last year the voluntary service had to tell 200 people that it couldn’t accommodate them so hopefully this will be avoided in future.

The fact that so many women are seeking help for both themselves and their children is heartbreaking and a poor indictment of our society.

As a nation we are constantly reminded ourselves that this is a great little country and we are one of the happiest people on earth.

But nearly 8,000 women and over 3,000 children received support from domestic violence services nationwide in 2011.

“We think these figures are horrific and a sad indictment of Irish society,” a spokesperson for Women’s Aid Dundalk said this week.

At the end of last year, Safe Ireland launched its ‘Man-up’ campaign which is highlighting the effects of domestic violence and the need to get the support of men in counter-acting it.

The feedback has been great and in February-March a man’s marathon will be held in Dundalk in support of Women’s Aid. The victims of domestic violence have fathers, brothers, nephews, uncles, and male friends, who are concerned about these crimes and will surely want to support or take part in this event.
