McDonagh comedy for the Tain Theatre

The Tain Theatre will surely rock with laughter from February 27 intil March 2 when the Dolmen Theatre group celebrate their 30th anniversary with a special production of Martin McDonagh’s hilarious black comedy ‘The Cripple of Inishman’.

The group are determined to make their 30th anniversary something really special and are putting in a huge effort to make this a very entertaining production.

The cast includes several “oldies” who have been around since the groups was founded and some who are making their Dolmen début.

Stars of the show will include Gabriel Tuomey, Deirdre Craven, Paul Mcgee, Paudi Breen, Heleena Mullins, Kieran Lawless, Jack Montgomery, Trevor Lee and Maeve Montgomery.

Gerry Roddy and Una Kirk are directing, Marscella Harrison is stage manager, Tom McDermott is on lights, Pauline Wilson is in the sound box and the set is been built by Oliver Hodgers.

The stage will be taken over with a motley collection of mischievous miscreants including a 93 year drunken Mammy and her eccentric ‘newsboy’ son who blackmails all and sundry with vicious rumours and distorted truths.

Thrown into the mix are two mad aunties, slippy Helen who delights at “pegging eggs at poor Father Barrett” and her brother Bartley.

The chagrin amongst the inhabitants increases dramatically when a Hollywood crew filming the Man of Aran, take cripple Billy Claven to America and groom him for stardom.

Whilst the humour is dark, McDonagh has a unique skill that allows us laugh with and at his characters yet simultaneously empathise and indeed feel deeply for them.

Despite the laughter, audiences will come away with a sympathy for the underlying reality of island life in isolated parts of Ireland in 1934 when the play is set.

You can book your tickets now at the Tain Theatre Box Office by calling 0429392919.

There is a special admission rate of 10 euros only on Wednesday, February 27.
