Marist students drive teachers round bend
St Mary's College students had an early morning start and by the end of the day, they were literally driving their teachers around the bend.
Thankfully, it was all part of a class trip as the students visited Rosemary Smith's driving school in Kildare.
Class 4A travelled on Monday with year head John Englishby and it was the turn of 4B on Tuesday with form teacher Anita White.
Upon arrival, students were then asked to attend a short initial briefing to let them know their programme for the day, before splitting into two groups.
The first group were taken to the cars and were brought to the driving track. At the track, they were put through their paces, in the three dual-controlled cars by the experienced instructors.
At the same time, the second group were kept in the classroom for some tuition on the rules of the road and the art of driving properly.
Following a short break the roles were reversed with the classroom group out in the cars and the now experienced drivers were forced to sit in the classroom.
Classes in the afternoon concentrated on the consequences of driving without paying attention or while under the influence of drink or drugs.
It was a stark reminder to the learner drivers of the lethal nature of the vehicles they were learning to drive. Also in the classroom the students were given a run through a sample theory test.
Meanwhile, on the driving track, the students were doing three-point turns, driving through cones and learning to parallel park.
The day ended with a quick review of the day and then it was back on the road home to Dundalk.
