Man who threw buggy over bridge in Dundalk sparks search and rescue operation as eye witness thought a baby was in stroller
A MAN who threw a buggy over a bridge in Dundalk sparked a search and rescue operation after an eye-witness told Gardai there may have been a baby in it.
A shocked passer-by telephoned Dundalk Garda Station to report the incident which occured at the Tin Bridge on Monday, February 8 at 4.30pm.
"We were concerned because the witness said there might have been a baby in the buggy so we contacted the fire service and the Sub Aqua Search & Rescue Unit," said a Garda spokesperson.
According to a Sub Aqua Search & Rescue Unit spokesperson, the fire service had to provide them with an Area Platform Ladder (ALP) as there was no slipway access to the water.
"We had to get a hydraulic platform to lower the boat into the water. We searched the area for an hour and a half. We recovered the buggy but there was nothing in it," he said.
"We are calling for a slipway to be put in there. If it hadn't been for the fire service we wouldn't have been able to access the water."
The spokesperson added: "We had another incident two weeks ago where we saved a woman's life after she fell into the water. Again we had to rely on the fire service.
"Last March at 3am one morning we had a similar incident in which we rescued a woman who was in the middle of the river. It;s getting more common now.
"If something's not done about this, there might be a tragedy. We need to get a slipway put in there. Every second counts in those kind of situations."
