Man stole bicycle from outside chip shop at Roden Place

A 36-year-old man with 59 previous convictions who took a bicycle from outside a chip shop at Roden Place in August last year was fined e500 at the local court last Friday. He was Brendan Murphy, Riverwell Close, Toberona.

He was charged with unauthorised taking of the bicycle. Inspector Martin Beggy told the court that a woman had left the bike outside a chip shop. A witness identified defendant as the culprit and he was in possession of two bicycles at the time of his arrest. The woman’s bicycle was then recovered. Solicitor Conor MacGuill, defending, said that many of his client’s convictions had been picked up at a time when he was under the influence of heroin. He had been asked by the defendant to apologise to the injured party. He asked for leniency, stating that his client was unemployed and had five children.
