Louth looks set to get a new state of the art GAA county stadium

After years of being the Cinderella county, the only county in Ireland that does not have a ground capable of staging inter-county championship games, Louth is about to get a stadium that will be one of the finest in the region.

The Louth County Board and Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) have formed an alliance to built a new county GAA stadium beside the Dundalk Retail Park.

The new ground will hold 12,000, including a 4,000 seater stand, and will have floodlights, dressing room and indoor training facilities.

It would be built on land currently owned by Dundalk Town Council beside the Retail Park on the Relief Road.

Louth County Board chairman Padraig O’Connor and DkIT President Denis Cummins made a presentation last week to Dundalk Town Council outlining their joint proposal.

They want to built the 12,000 spectator facility next to the JJB Centre which is in receivership and which DkIT hopes to buy.

Mr Cummins pointed out that the DkIT multi-purpose campus sports centre can no longer cater for the college’s needs and in order to expand, it needed a partner. The GAA came forward and will part fund the project.

The college hopes to buy the JBB Centre and the stadium would be built on land owned by the town council next to the centre. Another strip of land in this area would also be needed.

The main entrance to the ground would be from the Inner Relief Road.

The 4,000 seater stand would be on the JBB side as the JBB Centre will house the dressing room and gym facilities.

The stand would have 15 seating rows and the terrace 11 rows.

There would be 500 car parking spaces.

Mr Padraig O’Connor chairman Louth GAA said 82 per cent of delegates at the Louth County Convention had voted in favour of the project.

It would be a new model for county grounds as it would have a practical capacity, would be on the town perimeter, have easy and adequate parking facilities, and be a venue for neutral games.

It would put Louth back on the GAA map and compliment the Darver GAA Centre.
