Louth Hospital staff back in early days
The above photograph has been sent in by Eamon Hoey, Sheelagh, Hackballscross.It shows some members of the staff of Louth County Hospital and we think it was taken in the late 1950s.
Eamon’s father, Peadar, originally from Upper Merches, is 8th from the left.
They were the Hoey’s of the original Hoey’s Lane and it was on their land that the hospital was built.
The hospital was opened in 1958 by Cardinal Dalton and the man who would succeed him, the then archbishop William Conway.
At the time it was one of the most modern county hospitals in the country.
It replaced the Louth Hospital at the top of Stapleton Place which had been built in the 1800s and remained open until 1958.
The new Louth was a state-of-the-art hospital for forty years but then the health cuts began.
According to figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) as many as 97 beds have been closed at Louth County Hospital up until May of this year.
This figures includes closures for acute and non-acute beds at the hospital.
The INMO has updated its list of bed closures which now shows that 2,402 public beds are closed around the country compared with 705 when the survey commenced in October 2009.
There has however been a decrease in the number of people on trolleys across the state according to the INMO.
