County Louth is getting its own branch of the Irish Multiple Births Association (IMBA), a support group for parents (or expectant parents) of twins, triplets, and more.
The IMBA is a registered charity managed by volunteers, all of whom are parents of multiples themselves.
Caoimhe O’Dwyer, who lives in Castlebellingham, has set up the group here in County Louth.
Caoimhe herself has four children Lochlann who is four, Ifeult who is three and twin boys Rian and Odhran who are one.
“I first joined the association when I was expecting my twins,” Caoimhe told the Democrat. “Clubs have been been set up all over Ireland but until now, there hasn’t been a club in Co. Louth.”
The new club will meet for coffee and a chat twice a month, on the second and last Fridays of each month.
The club meets at the M1 service station play area of the southbound Castlebellingham Services Area on the M1 motorway.
“We had our first meeting at the end of February and it went very well.
“The location ticks a lot of boxes as it has a play area, is easily accessible and has great parking facilities.”
Parents can have a cup of coffee and chat about the joys and challenges of being a multiple birth parent while the kids get to play with the other children. Non-multiple siblings are always welcome too.
“We have gotten a great response so far and have had a few queries about the meetings.
“We are the same as a normal baby group but just a bit more specialised.
“It is complicated to get out and about with multiples it is important to have support there so parents don’t become isolated.
“The point of these meetings is that parents will have someone to chat and relate to.
“Being a parent of multiples is amazing but it is also very full on.”
Caoimhe hopes to be able to set up some day trips when the group becomes more established
