Local TDs Mary Moran and Ged Nash sit in on brewing union dispute with Diageo workers
Senator Mary Moran and Deputy Ged Nash attended a briefing this week in Leinster House between members of the Oireachtas from Louth and a delegation of workers from from the Diageo plant in Dundalk.
At the briefing the delegation from The Great Northern Brewery Dundalk updated Oireachtas members in relation to the negotiations between Diageo management and the workers on their proposed redundancy packages.
“The unfortunate decision to close the Dundalk plant will be a huge blow to Dundalk and will see the end of a long brewing tradition in the town dating back to the nineteenth century,” Senator Moran said.
“It is essential that the remaining staff members are rewarded for their many years of service.
“Indeed many of those present have worked in the brewery for over thirty years and have made a huge contribution to the commercial success of Diageo.
“It is essential now that their immense contribution to the company is recognised by Diageo.
Her Dail colleague Deputy Ged Nash added:
“The workers are naturally frustrated thatnine months after the announcement to close the plant a redundancy package has not been agreed. We welcome the decision taken at the briefing that the Louth Oireachtasmembers would request a meeting with senior management in Diageo to discuss this issue.
