Kearney steps in on DkIT/JJB deal
RUGBY super-star Rob Kearney is making a visit to DkIT this Wednesday to encourage students to vote on whether or not DkIT should acquire the JJB sports complex.
The Ireland ace, who is currently laid off from rugby duties due to a back injury, is officially going to speak to students in a push to get students to inform themselves about the upcoming plebiscite.
After months of negotiations and speculation, DkIT are on the verge of acquiring the JJB facility, which will considerably add to the institution’s sports facilities.
However, the cost of DkIT purchasing the JJB complex would see a rise in the student levy, which means it must be voted on in a plebiscite (aka a referendum).
“There will be an information session on the vote,” The Head of Communications at Dundalk Institute of Technology Margaret Clarke said. “And Rob will be attending to hoepfully encourage students to inform themselves on the issue and to go out and vote.
“Obviously someone like Rob can really capture the students attention and hopefully help create a public discussion on the acquisition of the facility.”
Asked if Kearney was for or against the move Ms Clarke said:
“I don’t know”, though one would imagine the fact that a big name sports star chosen to speak to the students would suggest his prescence will be a bid to pass a pro-JJB vote.
The Dundalk Democrat attempted to contact Kearney but were unable to before going to print.
A vote on whether or not to accept the move is the last hurdle in the way of a deal which has been months in the making.
Earlier this month JJB closed its doors across the country, but the excellent sporting facilties at the complex would appear to be an ideal fit for the DkIT campus and would bolster their already existing facilities.
