Heroin seized during search of home

A Garda told a Judge that he couldn’t but help feel sorry for an Ardee man who became involved in drug dealing to feed his heroin addiction.

Clint Reilly a 36 year-old unemployed painter and decorator appeared before Dundalk Circuit Criminal Court on Thursday as result of the seizure of €2,645 of heroin from his then home in Ardee.

During the search at Sliabh Breagh on June 10th last year Gardai discovered a quantity of heroin in the accused’s bed. There was also €4,125 in cash nearby. A number of bags containing heroin was also found.

The accused told Gardai he was a heroin addict. His habit was costing him up to €200 a day and was in receipt of €188 in social welfare a week. He indicated he was substantially in debt to a dealer.

The Detective said that the accused co-operated with him in the investigation. The accused was described by his barrister as timid and emotional. He showed no evidence of materially gaining from his dealing. The defence barrister said the accused had engaged on a methadone programme and wanted to end his drug habit. He left school at 15. He started taking drugs when he was 17 and developed an addiction to heroin when he was 22. He was described as a moderate risk to re-offend. He was very conscious of the effect of his offending on his elderly parents, particularly his mother, and wished to make a life for his seven year-old son.

Judge Leonie Reynolds said she was concerned that the accused was previously on a methadone programme. He clearly needed residential treatment to overcome his habit. She adjourned sentencing to allow allow him seek a place and remanded him on bail to the sitting on February 22.
