Harp workers meet Adams

Admas meets Diageo workers at Leinster House.

Sinn Féin TD for Louth Gerry Adams met this with a delegation of workers from the Diageo plant in Dundalk in Leinster House.

The Sinn Féin TD assured the workers of “Sinn Féin’s full support for them” and committed Sinn Féin to “do all we can to help and assist in maintaining the plant in Dundalk and securing the rights and entitlements of all of the workers”.

Speaking after the meeting Deputy Adams said:

“The workers I met today were devastated by the news they received last Thursday that their jobs  and the jobs of up to 100 workers in Dundalk and 150 jobs in Kilkenny are gone.

The Great Northern brewery has been a key employer in the Dundalk area for generations and its closure would be a devastating blow to the economy of the town.

The workers in the brewery have made a substantial contribution over many years to what is a very profitable company. They have been loyal to Diageo – its time Diageo demonstrated some loyalty to the workers.

I intend to speak to Diageo management. I have already written to the Minister of Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation Richard Bruton asking him to arrange an urgent meeting with Diageo by him to press for a reversal of this decision.

Workers at Diageo were last week hit with the news that they were all dreading, that the plant would be officially closing its doors in July of 2013.

The closure has angered workers at the plant who believed that if they adhered to an agreement made in 2009, that the plant could be saved.
