Great Ireland runners!

By James Rogers

FORTY four members of Dundalk Gaels GFC set off for the Phoenix Park in Dublin on Sunday morning to take part in the Great Ireland Run.

The event was organised by the club to raise funds for Temple Street Childrens' Hospital, the local St Vincent de Paul and the upcoming developments at their grounds at Pairc na nGael which will see them expand their clubrooms and build a brand new all-weather pitch.

Speaking after the event, club chairman Niall Lambert said it was a memorable day for all those who had taken part.

“It went very well,” he said.

“There were 44 of us who took part in the run and Conor Oakes had the privilage of being the first person from our group to finish in a time of about 43 minutes. It wasn't overally competitive though as we had a good combination of runners, walkers and joggers.

“We don't have a full tally added up yet but it is estimated that we raised a substantial amount for Temple Street, St Vincent de Paul and ourselves so that makes it all worthwhile.”

After their run, the Gaels party returned to Kennedy's Bar on the Carrick Road for food and drink and Niall said it was the perfect end to a great day.

“It was a great day and well worth it. We met a lot of people from Dundalk up at the event and a few people who didn't take part were able to meet up with us afterwards in Kennedy's.

“It was a great success overall and a great club day even from the social aspect of it and it's something we definitely intend to do again next year. Gerry Oakes and Clodagh Culligan are to be complimented for the work they did in making it happen.
