Gerry Adams says this decision to run for TD in Louth has been on the cards for a decade
By James Rogers
GERRY Adams admitted that his decision to run in a General Election in the Republic had been something that has been on the cards for almost a decade.
He denied claims, however, that he had pushed sitting Louth TD Arthur Morgan into a retirement from politics in order to take up the fight for a seat in this constituency.
"Arthur going and me going forward is just coincidence," he said.
"The notion of me standing in a southern election has been argued back and forth for 10 years.
"The reason I'm only doing it now is because of the crisis in the economy and the sameness of Fine Gael and Labour.
"They're committing to the same things as Fianna Fail and they're the very people who created this mess yet now they're saying they're going to resolve it?
"It's death by a thousand cuts at the moment.
"We all came together recently as a party and I took the decision that it was finally time to go forward as a candidate in the Republic's next General Election.
"Then Arthur's decision came along and he said we needed to sort ourselves as soon as possible and announce our plans. I spoke to plenty of people here and they were behind me.
"It suited me to contest the election here as well because I know the area so well."
