Garda injured during arrest

A Garda twisted his knee and was out of work for five months following an incident in which a 26-year-old man resisted arrest, the local court heard.

Mark Riordan, Blackwater Court, Dundalk appeared on a charge of disorder on April 29 last.

Inspector Domhnall Sweeney told the court that Gardai were notified of a burglary at Kingswood, Blackrock on April 29 last. They spoke to a woman who was the injured party. They found the handle of a hammer lying on the kitchen table.

When they left the house, they saw defendant coming out of a shed and one of the Gardai found an open toolbox with the part of a hammer which matched the one on the kitchen table. They arrestdd the defendant and went to put him in a patrol car. He resisted and refused to get in and during a struggle the one of the Gardai was injured.

Solicitor Dara Matthews said that defendant was “extremely intoxicated” at the time. He wanted to apologise to the Gardai for his behaviour and had e170 in court. Judge Hamill ordered him to pay e150 forthwith
