Musician Duke Special was caught speeding at up to 187 kilometres an hour on the M1 motorway, Dundalk district court heard last week.
The singer song writer with an address at Lomond Avenue in Belfast, appeared under his real name Peter Wilson.
The 42 year old was originally charged with dangerous driving arising out of the incident at Gibstown, Dundalk on the 22nd of August last, but the court heard last Wednesday he was willing to plead guilty to careless driving if it was acceptable to the court.
Garda Insp. Brendan Cadden told the court the accused was travelling northbound on the M1 around 10pm when gardai on patrol observed him driving at 170 kph.
The inspector added Mr. Wilson’s car reached a speed of 187 k.p.h at one stage.
The court heard traffic was light at the time but the road surface was wet and it was getting dark.
Defence solicitor Eleanor Kelly said her client was a self employed musician who was driving back from a concert ‘down south’.
She said he held his hands up immediately after he was stopped. She added that he took a chance that he now realises he shouldn’t have and described the case as an eye opener.
The solicitor added the defendant realised he had been a danger to himself and other road users.
She said her client was extremely embarrassed to be in court and urged the court not to record a conviction - saying the accused needed his licence as he travels a lot for his work and had €200 in cash and €200 euro in bail money for the court poor box. Judge Flann Brennan said it was a matter of excessive speed.
He imposed a €350 fine for careless driving. He said he would not disqualify the accused from driving but warned “if he drives at that speed again I will”.
