A DkIT version of the “Harlem Shake”, an internet viral sensation, has clocked over 23,000 hits on Youtube and features local iPriest, Fr. Paddy Rushe.

The video, which was organised by DkIT student Stephen Branagan, was filmed last week and has created a buzz around the campus.

The sensation was born in early February when five teenagers from Australia created a video when they danced to a the song “Harlem Shake by electronic musician Baauer.

The video lasts just over 30 seconds and begins with one person in a costume dancing alone to the song.

Seconds later, an entire crowd is doing a crazy dance in outfits with strange props, including a trolley.

DkIT’s version then cuts to the star of the show, Fr Paddy Rushe, otherwise known as iPriest, who displays his funky moves.

“I had planned do make a video with friends, but then I thought it would be a good idea if I started an event for it here on campus,” said Stephen Branagan while speaking to The Dundalk Democrat this week.

“I started an event on the internet and it got a lot of attention. The weather was casted to be sunny and it would bring some buzz to the campus.”

A large gathering of students made the effort and featured in the video.

When asked how did Fr. Rushe get involved, Stephen said “I met Fr. Rushe and I asked him would he feature in the film.

“He said yes, but he didn’t have a clue what it was. I showed him some videos and he took part and had some fun.

“He is very approachable here in the college. He has a new approach to things. I am delighted that he got a good response.”

Meanwhile, Fr. Rushe, who is the Chaplin of DkIT, says that life is about taking part and that he has no dancing experience.

“My philosophy is about taking part, you have to take part in life. Young people like these trendy things, it was a very innocent but fun thing.

“When I came to the DkIT I wanted to be involved in student activities. DkIT is a brilliant place to be, there is a lot going on that people don’t know about.

“I will do anything that will make students feel that I am approachable.”

Although Fr. Rushe says that his family joke about his dancing moves, his performance is impressive.

“I am the family joke when it comes to dancing,” admits Fr. Rushe, “I never really felt that I could dance, but I can shake a little.

“I will leave it up to the public to decide if I can dance or not,” said bubbly Fr. Rushe.
