The President of the DkIT Student Union has called on the government to address the eligibility criteria for maintenance grant for students whose parents are made redundant during term.

The Dundalk Democrat raised the issue with David Branagan after students contacted the paper about their difficulty in receiving a grant.

One student, who wishes to be unnamed, told the paper that although his father was made redundant in December, he does not qualify for a maintenance grant.

The worrying problem comes at a time when hundreds of people are losing their jobs.

Reacting to the news, David Branigan said “When students are applying for a grant, the government and SUSI base their decision on income within the past twelve months, but don’t take into consideration the current situation when suddenly income is changed.

“For students who are in this situation, I would strongly advise them to write an appeal letter to SUSI, stating their situation and get a letter from the employer.

“Students can also apply for the Student Assistance Fund in the college and they can receive anything up to e2000.

“This fund is for students who are experiencing hardship and financial difficulties.”

Meanwhile, a huge number of students have been availing of the food parcels as the SUSI crisis continues.

“As soon as we had the food parcels, students were contacting us looking for them,” said David, “We went into local supermarkets and got all the essentials that students need.

“Students in the DkIT are under enough exam pressure without the added pressure of lack of food.

“I know that there are still students facing difficulties with the SUSI situation and I would ask them to come to the Union and we will help them.”
