Fisherman rescued by Greenore Coastguard Unit
AN experienced fisherman who was on holiday in the area was rescued recently off the Greenore shore.
The man had been engrossed in his fly fishing expedition off the sand banks on a springtide and neglected to notice the incoming sea cutting off his retreat to the shoreline.
The drama unfolded when he commenced wading to shore and fortunately for him a local man watching attentively from his home over 200 yards away envisaged a dangerous situation unfolding and called the local Greenore Coastguard Unit.
With the marine rescue services, Kilkeel Lifeboat and Sikorsky Helicopter en route to the scene but with the situation deteriorating rapidly Greenore Coastguard, with the aid of a local fisherman and his boat successfully rescued the stricken fisherman from the sea in the nick of time.
On arrival to shore the casualty was treated by the helicopter crew for hypothermia and flown to Daisy Hill hospital in Newry.
On release from hospital later in the week the relieved fisherman personally thanked all those involved in his rescue and complimented the community, rescue services and all involved on their diligence, kindness and ability to work together in these dramatic rescue situations.
Greenore Coastguard Area Officer John Murphy wishes to thank his unit and all involved in this successful rescue and once again stresses the need for caution and vigilance around our coastline and if in need of assistance contact the emergency services immediately.
