First potato planted by Minister at local school
The Eco friendly senior classes of St. Fursey's N.S. Haggardstown were treated to a crash course in potato planting last week by the Minster for Food and agriculture Mr. Trevor Sargent when he visited the school as part of the Nationwide Incredible Edibles schools campaign.
Pioneer of a campaign specifically designed to get primary school children growing their own vegetables and an avid gardener himself, Minister Sargent, accompanied by Cllr. Mark Deary was given the honour of planting the first potato of the season to kick start this years Incredible Edible project which will later be expanded to include other school-grown produce such as strawberries, scallions and lettuce.
Sixth class student and Chairman of the Green School's Committee Luke Hollywood turned Political Correspondent for the day when he expertly interviewed Mr. Sergant for a broadcast on LMFM and the Minster then found the time to award prizes to the winners of the school's poster competition, congratulating them on their imaginative use of energy saving slogans and images.
The poster winners were as follows:
Ms. Doonan's Junior Infants class winner – Alice Reedy, Mrs. Toner's Junior infants and first class winner – Ava Hamill, Ms. Molloy's first and second class winner – Aislinn Connor, Ms. Renahan's second and third class winner – Christy Joyce, Ms. McGuinness' third and forth class winner – Jack Mulligan Traynor, Ms. Valleley/Ms. Jones forth and fifth class winner – Catherine Neacy and Ms. Mulholland's sixth class winner – Meabh O' Hanrahan.
